Median is the most common measurement. So if 20 guys were measured, and the most common value was 6”, that would be the median. It’s a sort of “weighted average”, but in this case, hopefully without the use of weights 😆

My old lecturer, who thought I was an idiot, would be so proud of me now, for hosting a brief statistics tutorial on a website for people who want to have extramarital affairs! 😂😂😂

Seriously though, it sounds like @PooleT69 knows this subject far better than me, so maybe Professor Poole can correct me; as I’ve almost certainly given you false/flawed info 🤷🏽‍♂️

Median is normal distribution right? That had to be most applicable to size (ahem) average…

Thank you for raising the tone. You’ve managed to drag us from the tawdry depth of enormous Italian (or Scottish) schlongs, to Statistics, which I twice barely passed in University

Personally, I’d favour the median, but that would either mean trusting an honour system in terms of the data submitted, or would require photo/video evidence with a ruler or measuring tape

Which unfortunately, would bring us back to where we started 😳

I hate to be pedantic but average isn’t actually subjective as has been suggested.

Average is defined as a ‘number expressing the central or typical value in a set of data, in particular the mode, median, or (most commonly) the mean, which is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number’.

The reason it has become subjective in this context is that we don’t have access to the complete data and are therefore not in a position to determine whether we are above average, below average, or bang on average.

And of course the question is do we use only members of IE as our data or the entire population ? I have no idea whether this would produce a different average. Would we then have to calculate an average of all the different averages ?

And I wonder why I haven’t found my long term IE yet…
