I dont mind if a woman has eaten garlic - never found it a bad taste.

Certain curries wouldn't be good.

I guess garlic bread for starters followed by spag bol with gorgonzola and crackers to finish is something to avoid then. So that's where I have been going wrong! Damn!

Don't stress it food or drinks are what I do. You get a chance to chat and see if you actually have anything in common. Unless you just want to hit the sack, not for me but works for some. I like to actually get on with someone to take intimacy further. Do what feels right for you at the time.

I like to go with the flow. Whether it's dinner or just a drink. The point is to have face to face quality time with someone who you have already "met" albeit virtually and decide if there is enough connection and chemistry to take things further.

My ideal first meet is mid morning. The coffee meet. This means that if it's a definite no, it's fairly obvious. Short and sweet or perhaps extended due to growing feelings?

Then if all is well, lunch could be next. This is useful to know your prospective ie eating and restaurant behaviour. Do they treat waiters like slaves, and will half their meal get sprayed over your shirt? Do they eat well? Can you expect a tryst with belching and unruly flatulence?
